Question from kimrmora
How green is the cleaner Simple Green?
Debra’s Answer
The MSDS for SImple Green lists no hazardous chemicals, but their ingredients list shows some ingredients I don’t consider safe.
The ingredients are: Water (Aqua), Butoxyethanol, Mixed Alcohol Ethoxylate, Tetrapotassium Pyrophosphate, Sodium Citrate, Fragrance, Colorant.
Butoxyethanol is a toxic ethylene glycol (see www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051). Synthetic fragrances are neurotoxicants (affect the nervous system).
They may be diluted enough to not be listed on the MSDS, however, this begs the question, is a diluted toxic chemical a safe product overall?
Personally, I clean with soap, baking soda, and vinegar.
There are so many chemicals in stores that I doubt if you could limit it to Simple Green bothering you. I have problems tolerating EVERY store so just be mindful and air everything out and change your clothes when you get home. I usually can tell that I pick up odors on my clothes once I am in my house. I am with Reenie I have problems with every cleaner I have tried especially if it gets sprayed into the air and I have tried them all. Even the vinegar can bother me. One of the least offending has been Organic and Nature All Purpose from NEEDS catalog. Also I have done well with all of the Nature Clean products esp the bath bar. They make a tub and tile scrub that looks like Soft Scrub but without an offending odor. Good luck!
Since 2002 I have had an allergic reaction to many stores, usually the large chain stores. I thought at first it was the plastic, but now believe it may be the use of Simple Green to clean the stores. Does anyone know when Simple Green became so popular with the janitorial services in California? I am wondering if it coinsides with the start of my problems in 2002. Thanks for ANY info on Simple Green including whether there is any way to test for allergies to the indredients.
Does anyone know how I can find out when Simple Green began to be distributed in the usa? I tried emailing the company, but they won’t get back to me–what a surprise. I suspect the stores, doctor’s offices etc. are being cleaned with Simple Green or worse. Also wondering about hospitals. I’ve had a reaction in two doctor’s offices and many stores, but just since 2002 and more in the last 2-3 years.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
I would say just contact the manufacturer.
