Question from vivian
I came across your website while trying to get information about the safety of silicone cookware. I received a bright red tart pan for Christmas, and the first time I baked with it I noticed a distinctly odd odor. The nose is considered the “first line of defense” from an evolutionary standpoint, and if you can smell chemicals, they probably are leaching into your food. Silicone by itself may not be harmful, but what about the materials used to color it? I will definitely not cook with this again, the flavor and odor, while subtle, is definitely a cause for concern! Also, people’s ability to detect odors can be vastly variable, so many people will never notice this…Thanks for a great website.
What color is non-colored silicone? I have a Kenmore darkish grey silicone flipping spoon that I just purchased and can’t stand using it after 2 times of smelling and tasting the same chemical smell from it–yes it comes off into my food. It’s horrible. I twisted the spoon to see if it had any white marks (it didn’t) so I figure it’s all silicone. I don’t ever want to use it again and am pretty disappointed.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
My understanding is it is kind of a beige color. Darkish grey sounds like it is colored to me.
We all know cake is not a health food so if we stop eating cake the need for this kind of bakeware is limited
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
I agree! 🙂
Silicone bakeware affects my asthma and reactive airway disease and causes breathing problems with me. I can’t use it and the smell is bothersome too. I don’t believe that it’s non-toxic. I also have this problem with aerosol cooking sprays too.
