Question from Tania
Hi Debra,
I wanted to ask what are your thoughts about reclaimed wood. I like this dresser for my young son’s bedroom (he doesn’t have any strong sensitivities) but obviously I wouldn’t want to put something toxic in his bedroom.
Many thanks!!!

Debra’s Answer
I think reclaimed wood is a wonderful idea for the environment, however, many reclaimed woods are toxic.
Often they don’t reveal the source of the wood, but this one does: “The reclaimed pine comes from a variety of sources, including shipping pallets and packing crates.”
Now shipping pallets and packing crates have various toxic chemicals applied, including pesticides and wood preservatives. So I wouldn’t recommend using a reclaimed wood product with these wood sources.
Good you asked about this.
Hi Debra, thanks so much for the insight. I have had a hard time finding kids bedroom furniture that has non toxic finish. Now I found this headboard that says it’s made out of solid mango wood. It does not specify the type of finish. Do you think if I left the headboard and nightstand in the garage for some time to off-gas any finish that would be acceptable for kids? Thanks again for all your advice!!

Sorry, I can’t advise you about this product. The problem is the finish. It could be water-based or oil-based, If water-based it would outgas within a month or so, but oil-based could be outgassing toxic chemicals for years.
I called West Elm and the do not know anything about the finish at all. Their customer service information says simply “stain and lacquer.” I have to assume it’s toxic unless it specifies it’s not.
