Question from Kathleen S.
Hi Debra,
My understanding of Real Salt is that it was mined in an area where nuclear testing had been done. My chiropractor said she would never use it, but recommend Celtic Salt. I read that Himalayan salt has problems too. So it seems very difficult to find any thing safe.
Debra’s Answer
I’ve done extensive research on salt and came to the conclusion that safest salts are those that come from underground sources. These are ancient sea beds that are not contaminated with modern pollution. So that would be Real Salt and The Original Himalayan Salt.
While I ate Celtic Salt for many years, I no longer eat any salts that come from the sea due to extensive pollution of sea water. Celtic Salt and some other salts are harvested from pristine areas and so are better than other sea salts, but underground salts are protected from modern pollution.
Here’s a response from Real Salt about your radiation question. Please share it with your chiropractor. “Nuclear tests were done in Nevada (not Utah) in the 1950’s, but it in terms of nuclear protection (time, distance, shielding), there is no possible contamination of our Real Salt.”

Dear Debra –
First of all, thank you for being who you are. Your contribution to the earth and the human race is over the top.
Recently, I read that Hippocrates Health Institute is backing the report that
all the oceans/seas on earth are radio active. Apparently, mollusks and seaside critters that cling to rocks are disappearing as one of the first results. In addition to algae being the bottom of the food chain, this also means don’t eat fish, even sockeye salmon which is supposed to be somewhat plastic free..
Hhave you heard this alarming news and if so, have you searched it out?
Thank you very much.
Diana
I took a look at some of the online information on this.
First of all, let me point you to the article Radiation in Nature. This shows all the types and amounts of background radiation that exist. These background levels have existed since pre-industrial time and are not particularly harmful to us.
The toxic problem in the world today is the result of industrial processes introduced by humans. Humans concentrate these naturally-occuring background elements and also turn them into new combinations that don’t exist in nature.
I couldn’t find the article you mentioned from the Hippocrates Health Clinic. so I can’t comment on what they said, but I’d like to give my own viewpoint.
Regardless of what is said by various people, the environment IS being polluted by industrial activity. It’s just common sense. When nuclear reactors melt down, radiation goes into the environment and spreads across the globe. Air and water move completely around the planet.
So I would say yes, all oceans are polluted with radiation, to greater or lesser degree depending on proximity to radiation sources.
Since this level of radiation is recent, only since the presence of nuclear reactors on the planet, any source of salt that is underground has been protected from radiation and would be more pure, and any source of “sea salt” would contain more radiation since it is taken from the polluted oceans of today.
This would be an arguement in favor of Real Salt.
Thank you for posting this & thank you, Debra for answering! I dislike how people will disseminate inaccurate info, instilling fear and inconvenience into others. I hope the salt I use is okay (http://funfreshfoods.com/seasonings/himalayan-pink-salt.html)!
I can’t evaluate this because there is no source given. This is just a marketing brand and not a manufacturer.
