Question from Ronn
Lately I’ve been seeing PLU numbers that start with 3 or 5, and I would like to know what those mean. I know that 4 is conventional produce, 9 is organic and 8 is genetically modified, but what do 3 and 5 mean? I’ve done a lot of searching online, but can’t seem to find the answer.
Debra’s Answer
I wasn’t able to find it either. Readers?
All price look up codes actually do have a particullar order that corresponds to a produce item or closely related similar items, regardless of where you are, it is not just random numbers.
Produce with PLU’s that begin with 3 (in my experience) are either conventional or they are store assigned PLU’s
for example: where I work the code for satsuma tangerines is 3198, but 3198 is a code just for our store for that product in our database. same thing with the king oyster at my store, the code for it is 3262, which was store assigned. some conventional produce that begins with the digit 3 include pumpkin (3134), broccoli romanesca/cauliflower (3320), arugula/sucrine (3328).
