Question from Mary A.
Help! My husband stepped in gas while at the gas station…he was wearing rubber soled, leather shoes. How can we get rid of the horrible odor ??
Debra’s Answer
I would put them out in the sun for a few days, sole side up. If that doesn’t work, toss them.
Wash the sole of the shoe w/a degreasing dish detergent like dawn or palmolive. Rinse well. Dry off w/paper towels. Give a sniff and see how much was removed. Then, wash w/white vinegar and more soap. This should take away the smell of the soap and the gas. Dawn dish detergent is used for cleaning oil off of the wildlife. I personally can’t stand the smell of Dawn. I actually use BabyGanics dish detergent and it is a great degreaser. It has no fragrance. I get BabyGanics products at Babies R Us. Don’t ditch the shoes. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. This recipe works!!!
I’ve also had this happen on occasion. I give the soles a good scrub with an old toothbrush and soap and water before putting them out in the sun. It takes a few days, but it does work.
