Question from nancy williams
Hi Debra, Do you know whether any chemically sensitive people have been able to tolerate a new product called “Zero Odor”. It is proprietary ingredients, but claims to encapsulate the odor molecules, and eliminate them rather than covering them up. I am having difficulty finding a used minivan with stow and go seats, as they all have smoke or air fresheners. This recent product says it works on smoke odor. Thank you.
Debra’s Answer
Has anyone tried Zero Odor?
Looking for a link to their website, I also found SCOE 10X “Immediate & Permanent Odor Elimination Technology.” They say it “is completely non-toxic, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly and very safe to use. SCOE 10X ;contains no biocidal properties whatsoever.”
“SCOE 10X contains no fragrances, alcohols or solvents (found in most other odor eliminator products like Febreze, ZeroOdor and Urine Gone) which are potentially dangerous.”
Anyone tried SCOE 10x?
Following the treads it makes me want to try each product being mentioned on the thread to know which the best is.
I just bought the small, $3.00 bottle of Zero Odor at Bed Bath & Beyond and sprayed it in our car to combat the residual odors of drinks spilled into the seats and carpets a couple years ago and then twice professionally (and not particularly successfully) cleaned out. The initial results seem good, with the car being free of some of the old funk, but having driven in the car immediately after spraying it with the Zero Oder (with all windows open), I have a slightly sore throat, like you have when you’ve caught a slight cold, or spent an evening in a smokey bar. I guess I’d recommend not doing what I did, and instead, let whatever space you spray air out well before spending much time in it.
I’ll come back in a few days with feedback on how well the deodorizing effect lasts.
I did exactly this about two weeks ago – sprayed the inside of my car, then drove around in it with the windows open for a total of about an hour. I got an irritated throat and lungs and it progressed into chest cold-like symptoms with coughing, phlegm in my lungs, and congestion in my sinuses, but with no infection – all clear mucus. About a week ago, I had a bit of blood in the mucus I coughed up from my lungs, but that has passed. Now, about two weeks after spraying the Zero Odor, I still have a chest-based cough and some phlegm, and a small bit of nasal congestion, but otherwise, I feel fine.
If you’re going to use one of these deodorizer sprays, I’d strongly recommend doing it only in an area that can air out completely before anyone goes and spends time in it!
Julie, how long ago did you buy your Smellsbegone? It used to be unscented but not the bottles I have bought in the last few years. I suppose the new odor is harmless but unpleasant. But then I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell.
The website SmellsBeGone.com has the products. Even the unscented.
my husband works at penske truck rental. They use smell zapper and he’s brought some home and it is wonderful!!!
I used odor gun years ago, but haven’t been able to find it anywhere and nothing that would eliminate odors the same. Have been trying to find something else that works the same or find out where to buy odor gun if it is still available.
I work for a car rental company and use Smell Zapper at work. It’s the best product we’ve found. I don’t know if it is available for consumers. It’s professional grade.
We used SCOE 6 years ago for a house that was steeped in cigarette odor. Sprayed every surface with a power paint sprayer. Then went back and rinsed down the walls and shampooed the carpet a second time. It was a lot of work but it did seem to eliminate the cigarette odor.
There were two problems. One is that SCOE has a pretty strong perfumey odor in itself. I don’t think I could tolerate it now (now that we have post-mold MCS). The second one is that we didn’t know at the time that the house was also over-run with mold, which still left a very bad odor, even after we thought we had eliminated the cigarette odor.
I’ve used Zero Odor successfully on cat urine (carpet & padding), caregiving for elderly dementia patient at home with incontinence (lift chair, mattress, carpet, diaper disposal bin, etc.) as well as old musty steamer trunk interior, car interior (cloth)/ carpet/ trunk, draperies, fabric upholstery, etc.
I’ve never tried to remove chemical ie., fragrance odors with it, but it’s worth a shot. I’ve used this wonderful product for over six years and always have some on hand. I once ordered large quantities on line to lessen the expense, but now use an always available 20% coupon at a bed/bath store with the initials BBB.
Good luck!
I love zero odor….been buying it for a long time…..only once when i sprayed a ton of it did i have a problem….can’t go too wrong….another product that is good is Force Out…
I haven’t tried Zero Odor or SCOE 10X. I did find the website for Zero Odor. Here it is: http://www.zeroodor.com/
Hi. I am very chemicallly sensitive. I recommend the fragrance-free version of Smells Begone. It is sodium chlorite (not chloride), comes in a spray bottle or by the gallon, has no smell. I spray it in my vacation condo after renters have stayed in my bedroom and used my bathroom. I also sometimes put a cup or two in a smelly load of laundry. I even scrubbed my ceramic tile floors in the vacation condo with it, after a renter scrubbed the floors , which are throughout the condo, with Lysol toilet bowl cleaner (!!!) ( my cleaning lady uses it before renters arrive- I don’t use it!) that he found in the master bathroom vanity – the smell was awful throughout the condo and I got very sick, but I got the smell out with Smells Begone. I refused to have him back, needless to say!
Smells Begone is at some Ace Hardware stores or online at cUltimatecleaners.com. Do try it out in a small area first, to see if you can tolerate it – my son was allergic to it. Also note that it is very drying on one’s hands. If you scrub with it, wear gloves or plastic bags on your hands.

We use Pure Ayre Odor Eliminator bought online at Petco.com or Dog.com (It is usually cheaper at Dog.com)
It has a natural mint scent not synthetic fragrance added to it and it doesn’t turn white carpet an off color like Lifekind Odor Eliminator does. Lifekind Odor Eliminator is all natural and smells like lime bought at Lifekind.com. We use it on our dark blue carpet.
I’ve just discovered Citrus Magic Odor Eliminator. It is fragrance free. Made of water, Vegetable Enzyme Complex. No artificial coloring or perfumes added. I bought it at Marshall’s.
Both Pure Ayre and Citrus Magic claim to be good on skunk scent and for use on your pets’ coat. That’s one of the reasons why I bought it. Hope I don’t get a chance to try it out though.
I have MCS, asthma and reactive airway disease and I do well with all 3 of them so I buy each when they are on sale. I’ve looked for years for one without any fragrance so when I found the Citrus Magic at Marshall’s I bought every bottle that they had. Good luck!
