Question from Bonnie Johnson
I have old wrought iron crank windows with sceens all over my house. I am getting ready to sell hopefully next year so relacing them would not be cost affective. This year I have carpenter ants in different locations. I have sealed any spot I find them with Elmers glue and it works well. However the screens on my iron windows are not sealed tight in some areas. That is where they are coming in. I was looking for a glue to use around the iron screen from the inside that is not toxic. Last year I had a closet that was sealed by a handy man with a silicone calk and I still can not go in that room. I am trying to avoid that mistake again. Any ideas on what to use?
Debra’s Answer
I don’t have any experience with this. Readers?
Maybe I have not let it dry completely before I looked at it. Seemed sort of whiteish looking. I will try it again. Thanks Debra.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
Yes, you need to let it dry completely.
If it was me, I would get something you could remove, like play dough or clay. Another idea – get borax, which is what they use in non-toxic ant killer, though it is toxic to fish and pets, and stuff it in the cracks. Later on it will wash out.
I have checked around and there are no glues that are non toxic except elmers. It dries white so it would show when I sell the house. I also went across to the company that makes Maxiforce ant gel to see if I could use it outside the window and they said it would dry out too fast to work. They recommend a spray that is supposed to be non toxic. Not sure if I believe that so I am still stuck. Hoping someone on here will have a better idea. Thanks Debra.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
Elmer’s dries white? Are you sure? It’s been my experience that Elmer’s White Glue dries clear.
Home Depot sells a non-toxic adhesive!!! And it truly is. I have called the manufacturer and asked. Here is a link to several different Eco-Bond adhesives on home depot’s website. I had to order it from Home Depot online, they do not sell it in the local brick and mortar store.
