Question from Janet
Is anything being done about the VOC’s from Laundry? When my neighbor does their laundry I get sharp pains in my head, the pressure in my ears is worse than it is on a bad airplane ride. All this research is out there why isn’t anything being done about it?
Lisa’s Answer
There are non-profit organization like the Environmental Working Group that work continuously to lobby for better government regulations of chemicals including those found in household cleaning supplies. While they are not focused specifically on individual sensitivities to fragrance in products they do work to minimize the use of harmful substances.
I hear you, Janet! I was chemically injured when laundry exhaust entered our condo unit through poorly installed windows, and exhaust fans (flaps on roof didn’t work) I suffered nerve damage (neuropathy) and began having severe cognitive challenges. Our cat began suffering seizures. We left that place and suddenly the cat never had another seizure. I, on the other hand, have improved a little, but unfortunately, remain chronically ill. I begged neighbors to stop using the toxic laundry products. Many were indignant and harassed me. Not one asked how this was exactly happening since we all had the same defective windows. Entitlement and their ignorance/disbelief in the toxicity of these products keeps them hostage to the makers of these products. I have shared my story over and over to those whom I meet. And as a result, I’ve had many people discontinue usage of said products. It’s the little successes that make me happy now. I do wish that someone would have an answer how we can fight back successfully. Every neighborhood has horrible toxic air now from these laundry products. I talk to people all over the country and many are tired of it. There must be something more we can do. Someone please help us find an answer.
Agree with you John. It is all over my neighborhood. I can’t even sit on my deck at times from the neighbors exhaust from the dryer. And forget about opening the windows for fresh air. I had a technician come in my house yesterday and the stench from his clothing was unbearable. I had to run three diffusers when he left.
