Debra’s Answer
Readers, any other creative suggestions?
Thank you for the suggestion Debra, I would like to add that we have unfinished furniture as well. One of our made in the USA furniture makers uses only solid Ash wood and another uses solid pine. We are now doing a lot of replacement for cushions and couches as well as custom pieces for home decor. We are here to help!
Thanks!

Here’s how I made my healthy sofa:
I bought a vintage sleigh bed frame (a skinny twin XL size) from an antique store years ago for $200. It’s made from solid cherrry wood and constructed without toxic glues.
For the seat cushion I used a cotton futon I had on hand and made an organic cotton slipcover for it. Then, I added a 3″ thick “topper” that I made from a reclaimed wool comforter. And, for back support I added a variety of pillows: a long bolster against the wall and natural fill pillows at both ends so I can lean back and put my feet up. I made slipcovers for all pieces from organic cotton and hemp or vintage cottons that have already out gassed. I love this piece because it’s non-toxic, comfortable and very versatile. It breaks it down easily (for moving and to store if necessary) and all of the cushions and pillows can be recovered whenever needed without being exposed to synthetic foam.
I hope this inspires!
