Question from Cats
Debra, Just found your site and love it. Learning so much it has got me thinking.
We have 2 indoor cats, 12 and 14 years old. Both have over active thyroid problems and take medication. My previous cat died of cancer.
Wondering, since you live a non-toxic life, do your animals fair better than the general population when it comes to health? I assume you keep them indoors?
Debra’s Answer
I currently don’t have any pets, but I have had cats in the past.
I had two cats who lived for well over ten years with no diseases. And they were outdoor cats, but I was living in a forest. Very healthy.
Of course, they were drinking filtered water and eating organic food. Real food, not cat food. But they were also living in a nontoxic enviornment.
I do think our modern lifestyle is affecting the health of our animal friends as well as our own human bodies.
A cat at Brighthaven in California (a place that cares for older cats) lived to be 35 or 37 years old (check website for accurate age). A few days ago on the net, I read that another cat lived to 27. If you’re going to buy canned food, check out PetFood Express rather than buying it at a supermarket for the quality is far superior. Raw food is best, they say, but with my 14 year old Siamese who has health problems, I’ve been told to lightly boil the organic chicken that I get from Whole Foods because otherwise he can’t digest it. After I lightly cook it, I grind it up in a rocket or bullet (tiny blender that’s easy to clean) with water and some baby veggie food such as butternut squash. Also, for an older cat, they say enzymes are a must. Dr. Mercola’s enzymes and probiotics were recommended to me and I’m using them. Higher quality cat food companies are Newmans, Wellness,’ Weruva, etc. With parathyroid, I’ve heard you must stay away from fish and marine life. As far as I know, this includes KELP which is in alot of canned food. and I’m using them. I don’t feed him Kibble even though he loves it.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
I suggest no canned pet food unless you want to feed your pet BPA.
