Question from Rubys Mom
What do you think of The 10″ Green Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri, with Smooth Ceramic Non-Stick Coating (100% PTFE and PFOA Free) ?
Debra’s Answer
The descrtption sounds good, but I’ve never actually seen one.
Readers, any experience?
Funny that, I own one and that’s why I’m on this website: trying to find an alternative to it. I bought it in Dec last year and it has been non-stick for about 6 months if I’m generous. It started developing sticking spots despite my using the cleaning instructions. It forms a film of food over the coating, it does not make me react (MCS). But the fumes from burned food does affect me (throat and eyes) so that still defeats the purpose on top of being impossible to cook eggs and crepes/pancakes with.
It’s ok for frying veggies and meats that you use cooking oil/fat with but anything like omelettes will stick in places and make you curse. Then you have got to scrub it without any tough pads (so fun) or use an actual lemon to scrub the pan (I’ve tried citric acid but a real lemon works better). Then you cook again and the same circus is in town for one more ride. Exhausting if like me you also have chronic pain and fatigue along with MCS. You can read the reviews of others like me who are struggling to clean their pans on Amazon.
However, as of 9 months cooking with it (4 times a week max) there is no pitting or coating off. I never put it in the dishwasher of course. I’m now trying to season my All-Clad stainless steel pan (apparently that’s possible) to make it non-stick because looking up all other green and non-toxic options doesn’t seem to work if you can’t handle washing things thoroughly all the time due to pain and fatigue like me every single time. If that’s not an issue for you, if only toxicity is a problem, then look up carbon steel (light) or the good old 10 million pound heavy cast iron ; )
