Question from Bonnie Johnson
I have always loved farmhouse type sinks. I have an old home and wanted to get one put in when I do the new countertop. I am looking at granit or some sort of stone for that. My understanding from my contracter is that I would not be able to handle the seal etc used to install a farmhouse sink and there are questions about bacteria growth? Does anyone here have one and if so what did they use to have it installed. Debra what are your thoughts?
Debra’s Answer
I love them too and wanted to install one in my kitchen but it was beyond my budget.
Readers, has anyone installed one and can answer Bonnie’s questions?
Thanks for getting back to me about this. Apparently there is a silacone seal that is used so it won’t leak below and around the sink. It is toxic they say. There also is the issue about it being so heavy and the cabinet holding it up. Then there is the countertop and it has to be sealed. Sounds like a stinky mess but I really like the look of them. Love the one you posted. I guess there are stainless ones you can have installed that have the look but still need glue or sealant.
Is the seal to which you refer on the counter or where the counter meets the sink? If the former, with dense stone, you can skip the seal altogether. We’ve lived 8 years with unsealed granite in the kitchen and our bath, and in the kids’ bath, a stone counter that looks like a river bottom. All unsealed, in great shape, no stains. Around the sink, I think a bead of silicone is what is usually used. That should be fine.
I cut to the chase and installed a beautiful new heavy gauge stainless steel, double-drainboard, double sink…..restaurant style…from a restaurant supply. Absolutely awesome, totally functional….and it goes perfectly here in our renovated barn. No seals, no finishing, nothing. I didn’t even install a dishwasher as it is now just too easy to do dishes!! I love it! Added the stainless tables as work tables and made this an uber efficient kitchen.
I am also interested in stone sinks. We are planning on some kitchen renovations but we haven’t decided yet which to buy. But i am really interested in stone sinks. I find them classic and beautiful just like the one featured here. With regards to the installation, i honestly do not have an idea so i can’t share anything about that but i’m hoping my husband would be the one to the job.
