Question from Rebecca
About safe (safer) hair coloring: I worked with a somewhat organic/safer hair colorist for the last several years who gave me blonde highlights (my hair is dark blonde naturally with some greying on top). She is no longer available….so on the search for a new person AND a safer hair product. I see there are now a number of hair-color products on WFoods shelves, etc, that claim to be less toxic (no ammonia, resorcinol, etc.) Can anyone recommend a hair coloring product, esp if you go “blonde highlights”, which has worked reasonably well for you? I’m also very scent-sensitive with MCS, so have to take great care. Thanks much!

Readers? Your experience?
My suggestion would be to find the new hairdresser and discuss this with him or her, as they are responsible for the outcome. They also will want to work with professional products and not an off-the-shelf product designed for home use.
Hi Debra;
Thank you for your suggestion. My experience (and limitation, because of inability to find a fully “green-conscious” hair-colorist that is truly transparent and/or knowledgable about ingredients) is that I need to be the one to select the hair-product and that I can’t rely on the colorist to really know fully what is “safe”, “safer” or perhaps really not safe at all (eg; toxic!) The outcome, or how my hair looks is one issue, of course. But the safety and lack of toxicity, is another. And I understand that there probably is not a fully, “safe, unscented, and non-toxic” method for applying blonde highlights, so I’m just looking for the better choice. Anyone with any product idea at all?? Perhaps most folks reading you aren’t as vain as I am about coloring my hair….!:) Good for them, if that’s the case, I admire that!:)
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
I understand. My hairdresser has been using All-Nutrient Organic Hair Color to give me blonde highlights for years. I’ve never had a problem with it and am happy with the results.
I just want to comment–for anyone who hasn’t had highlights and is wondering how they could possibly be safe–highllights are different from hair color in that the highlight color does not touch your scalp at all. The hairdresser pulls up strands of hair, applies the highlights with a brush, then wraps it in foil. As long as the highlight product has no volatile chemicals in it that you would inhale, there’s no danger at all.
I just had an idea for a business. Wouldn’t it be great if a hairdresser would come to your house and only use your organic products? That way we wouldn’t have to go to a toxic salon. I’m fortunate in that the salon I go to does not use toxic products. Wish they were all like that.
