Question from Viki
What is your opinion on organic mattresses with coil inner springs in them? Does it work like an antenna, collecting waves? (I have heard that before but never researched it.)
Lisa’s Answer
I am not an expert on EMFs (although I will be trained in it this coming summer). But, based on what I have read a steel mattress coil by itself does not emit EMFs. And it also does not attract or concentrate EMFs. This can be measured with a gaussmeter.
Hello, I have EHS and have had 2 EMF consultants test our house. They both indicated the reason coil springs can be an issue are not that they radiate EMFs, but they can become magnetized. Supposedly, the way to test whether or not the bed is magnetized is by running a fluid-filled compass over the bed. If I recall correctly, the bed is magnetized if the compass changes from pointing North.
When I studied Feng Shui with Karen Rauch Carter in 2008, as I recall she taught us that the metal bed springs did often create an EMF- like field, and should be avoided.
I sleep on an organic latex and cotton bed with a zippered cotton cover. I love it!
