Question from Elliotsmom
I’m trying to rid my house of flame retardant-treated polyester filled bedding, pillows, mattress pads, etc. I’m very frustrated that the only options I can find are extremely expensive. While I feel it is important to switch to bedding without these toxic chemicals, I don’t have it in my budget to spend several hundred dollars on a single mattress pad. Do you or anyone out there know of any sites or stores that offer wool, cotton or other material untreated with flame retardants that won’t break the budget? Maybe someone should open a web store that specializes in affordable eco-friendly products. Currently, it seems “going green” is only for the rich…
Hoping for a good night’s sleep!
Thanks!

Readers, any suggestions?
I haven’t checked prices recently.
I looked and looked across the Internet for a month or so. Heart of Vermont Heart of Vermont carries organic cotton/wool futons. You have to have a doctors prescription because they don’t use flame retardants. Europe and canada don’t use flame retardants in bedding, so technically you could get on google.Canada/Europe, etc. And look up mattresses. You could get a cheap one and have it shipped but only with a rx from a doctor. It’s the law. There was a place that builds them for you called black sheep mattress and the website looked legit. We went with heart of Vermont. 500 for toddlers full size mattress and 250 for crib mattress. However, I couldn’t sleep on it but my 3 year old has no problem.
