Question from Sage
Dear Debra,
I am currently looking for a new car seat for my 11 month baby, but all car seats stink. Do you know of any that are less toxic?
Thanks.

Hey there, I realize this is an old post but people will still access it. I just ordered a Cybex from Germany through Ebay–besides having outstanding safety ratings, they also pass toxicity tests with flying colors. If you can find a reliable dealer on Ebay, I’d suggest getting one from there so you know that it meets the EU requirements as opposed to the US’s almost non-existent toxicity regulations.
I should also add that whereas Orbit USED to be very low on the toxicity scale, recently (2014, I believe) they have switched foam suppliers and now ONLY their outer fabric is certified to meet Oeko-Tex standards. They provide very little info on what exactly is in their foam now, so I wouldn’t trust it if purchasing the newer models.
I have an Orbit Baby stroller and infant seat (orbitbaby.com). It uses Oeko-Tex fabric and no BFR flame retardant chemicals. They do have a toddler car seat also. there may have been a slight smell to the seat when I first got it, but is was not a bad, chemically smell. The fabric is nice and soft, better than my other kids Britax car seats. The company is local to me (Northern CA) but the products are made in China.
According to the test results of the independent German Stiftung Warentest the greenest car seat is the Norwegian Be Safe. (Norway has the highest standards for almost everything) Second is the German Cybex. Besides safety it has been a few years they check for harmful substances! You can see / buy their test results on their website.http://www.test.de/Autokindersitze-im-Test-1806826-tabelle/suche/?sort=hersteller&start=1&detail=ergebnisse&filter=null Use Google Chrome so it will be translated. If you want to avoid nasty US chemicals in your car seat…Have someone to buy and ship a European brand to you to the States. They won’t ship it to you since it’s illegal…http://www.besafe.no/Barnestol-tester/Testresultater
