Question from Shilpa
Hi Debra,
I have been researching for a safe mattress ever since I learnt about off gassing. My kid has turned 5 and I was startled to find out how dangerous it is, to be sleeping on the regular memory foam. I am planning to rid all mattresses at home.
I found your site to have valuable information. I would really appreciate if you can compare naturepedic vs avacadogreenmattress . Every time I try a 100% organic bed, it takes me to naturepedic. Is that the only company we should look for or am I missing something here.
Your recommendations and suggestions will be really helpful.
Debra’s Answer
Well, Naturepedic really is the best organic mattress (see Q&A: A Comparison of Certified Organic Mattresses)
But I’ll compare them to Avocado.
Naturepedic | Avocado | |
Latex | GOLS certified organic | natural latex |
Wool | GOTS certified organic | natural wool |
Cotton | GOTS certified organic | GOTS certified organic |
The biggest difference, however, is that Naturepedic is a certified organic mattress manufacturer, which means that every aspect of the process is certified organic—everything from the materials to the factory.
The only thing organic about this avocado is the cotton. Who knows what’s happening in the factory.
I’ll just mention that the Avocado website headline is false and misleading. they are not “Earth’s most green & healthy mattress.”
Thanks for all the information. How do you compare these three brand in terms of comfort and quality and being good for people who have backache?
Thanks
Comfort is a personal choice, so I can’t comment on that. Readers, can you share your experiences with any of these brands?
What kind of organic mattress can I get if I’m allergic to the wool?
I don’t even have to touch it, just breathing it makes me sick.
I’m not sure there is one. I had a client with the same problem and the solution we came up with was to cover the mattress with a Naturepedic Organic Waterproof Protector Pad. The entire pad, including the organic cotton fabric and polyurethane film waterproof layer. is certified organic and nontoxic by GOTS.
This might offer enough of a barrier to make it tolerable for you.
Thanks for your amazing work! Just a quick note: Happsy is also GOLS and GOTS certified! And, as you note, competitively priced! They appear to be a corporate relative to Naturepedic, and directly referenced Naturepedic as a source of comfort relative to honoring their warranty (should a customer need that).
Hello, I am also looking at the Avocado Green mattress because the Naturepedic is very expensive. I understand that the Avocado Green does not meet the standards for organic but could you please comment on its assertions that it is non-toxic. I am most concerned about off-gassing and exposure to toxic chemicals. They claim to be non-toxic with zero off-gassing (and Greenguard Gold certified). While it may not be organic, could you please discuss your thoughts on whether it is non-toxic? I also read through your opinions on air purifiers, thanks so much for all of your insights!
I suggest you look at Happsy mattresses. They are made from organic materials like Naturepedic but they are priced like Avocado.
I would like to know if you recommend a softer mattress. Happsy only carries one and it is too firm. Thank you!
Happsy offers a mattress topper that makes it softer

But there are many other mattresses listed on the Beds & Bedding page of Debra’s List< /a>.
For clarification, since this original post is old, Avocado uses only 100% GOTS organic cotton, 100% GOLS organic latex and 100% GOTS organic wool. The wool comes from our own cooperative and the latex is processed in our own facility. Our Avocado Green Mattress is Greenguard Gold Certified and Made Safe Nontoxic Certified. All certifications are public and in our name.
Is there an update on your assessment of the Avocado Mattress brand? I just bought the vegan full mattress for my asthmatic son (who is allergic to wool) and I am hoping that it’s now more comparable to the Naturepedic mattress?
Avocado has added certifications that make them a good choice. I still prefer Naturepedic because the company is so transparent and has been committed from the beginning to provide the healthiest product. I will be doing a more in-depth guide to mattresses soon.
I want to buy new mattress for my whole family. I had my kids mattresses wrapped in polypropylene foil but they started to complain about the noise and since we moved to Arizona they are saying it’s to hot during the night.
I decided to buy Naturopedic for my kids and I will give Avocado mattress a chance for me and my hubby. They are new company and they have to start somewhere. I will keep you posted 🙂
P.S. Debra thank you for your amazing work and enormous help. Your blog is the page when I always go for help. I started with Pureeffect water filter and there is a long list of items I bought thanks to you and I’m very happy with them!!!
You are very welcome. I’m very happy to hear that you are pleased with the products I’ve been recommending.
Do let us know about your experience with Avocado Green.
If you are looking for a less expensive mattress for yourself, you might want to take a look at the Happsy mattress.
You will be able to get a Happsy mattress for even less than an Avocado. Happsy uses certified organic cotton and wool (Avocado does not).
I’ve been told they will be available by mid-May.
Activated carbon absorbs toxic fumes and as long as you cover it with 3 layers you will be safe
Daliya Robson, where can you get activated carbon sheets. I used to have them, but they burned up along with my house from lava on the Big Island. There used to be an ad in the chemical injury newsletter I believe for them.
You can get them from Daliya at https://www.nontoxic.com/.
Hi Magda, please share your experience about matresses
