Question from Maria Mag
I just purchased an antimicrobial toilet seat cover! It is plastic throughout. Are these safe to use? Will this affect skin at all?
Debra’s Answer
In order to answer this question I would need to know
You can try to get this information from the manufacturer.
Though there are different types of plastics and antimicrobials, as a general rule I try to stay away from them, especially if I can’t find out what type they are.
Thank you Debra – I will look for the Casio calculator. What store did you buy it from?
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
I think it was Wal-Mart. I don’t usually shop there, but I couldn’t find a calculator without Microban in the standard office supply stores.
In respect to antibacterials – I just ordered a calculator from Office Depot’s catalog (read the description etc thoroughly) and it was delivered the other day and on the box it says”Microban – antimicrobial product protection – inhibits the growth of damaging bacteria on keys”. I am not happy about this and will probably send it back. What do you think? (I am annoyed that there was no mention of this in the description – I would never have bought it).
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
Isn’t that awful? I would return it. I saw that recently when I went to buy a new calculator. I wouldn’t buy it. I got a Casio HR-100TM, No microban. Why does a calculator need microban anyway?
Antimicrobal commonly means that triclosan was used in the product. A good resource for information about triclosan and antimicrobals can be found from “Beyond Pesticides”. Address is beyondpesticides.org/
