Question from Craig
Hi, Debra. I have a question. What boxes of chocolate do you recommend for Mother’s Day? Thanks.
Craig
Debra’s Answer
If you want chocolates in a pretty gift box, I don’t know of any organic chocolates you can buy in a store, but you might be able to order online. I started to do a search and found some, but they didn’t list their ingredients, so I couldn’t evaluate the sweeteners etc.
But let me say this about gifts. The best gifts are gifts that will make the receiver happy. If a box of chocolates says “I love you” to your Mom, then you should give her a box of chocolates of the kind SHE likes. Having a special treat one day out of the year is fine.
Of the boxes of chocolates that are generally available, I would choose Godiva. Not organic, has sugar, but no artificial ingredients or additives. It’s “all natural” unless they’ve changed since I last looked at the label. I recommended Godiva Chocolates in my first book Nontoxic & Natural in 1984. There was no organic chocolate then, and these were the best because they were all natural.
They are delicious and a very special gift.
Also look for a local chocolatier where you live. You can go in the shop and ask about ingredients and they will fill a box of chocolates you choose, just for your mom.
there’s a very fun source of raw and organic chocolates (and lots of other unusual items & foods) from http://www.therawfoodworld.com I love to try new foods and this company is always introducing/selling them
Sorry Debra, I disagree. These chocolates are full of toxic ingredients. No organic ingredients. Artificial vanilin.
You are totally correct. I didn’t say they were perfect. I’ve been posting a few better brands since. In fact, I’m redoing my chocolate page today and removing old ones and adding new ones. Still Godiva is better than some.
Hi, Debra. This is Craig. I asked my Mom what she wanted for Mother’s Day, and she told me she wanted a jacket. I showed her a jacket from Rawganique that she said she likes, bought it a week or so in advance, and she tried it on yesterday, and it fits her perfectly. I asked my friend Janice (she is an office Mom at our workplace and looks out for me and everybody) what she would want for Mother’s Day. She said anything is fine. I followed the advice that you have given to go to a local chocolatier near me Aigner Chocolates http://www.aignerchocolates.com/default.asp (I took a train on Saturday to Forest Hills 71st Ave in Queens) and I bought sugar-free Cat Tongue chocolates (I’m thinking more for her health) and the person working there said that was very thoughtful and caring of me. Yesterday, I gave Janice the sugar-free chocolates, and she thanked me for “looking out for my health”. That was my Mother’s Day. Debra, thank you so much for helping me with a Mother’s Day gift for Janice.
Theo Chocolate based in Seattle, Washington, has no soy. It’s one of the few that doesn’t have it. They are also organic, fair trade, and non-GMO. Check their website. There is also a chocolate database. I searched online once for chocolate without soy. Every brand is rated and you can search for non-soy chocolate, organic chocolate, nibs, bars, cocoa, etc.
Seattle is also the home of Fran’s Chocolates, they do have soy but are quite delicious.
Try Vosges. No preservatives. Sold at Whole Foods. Also Bernard Cailleboat has the most beautiful handmade candies. $$$$$ vegan and both gluten free.
