I just called Unfinished Furniture Giant and was told that the sides and bottoms of the desks are Plywood that meets the CARB2 standard for emissions. Does anyone have any experience with furniture from this website? I’m concerned that I will not be able to tolerate any levels of formaldehyde.
I don’t have experience with that website, however I can tell you there are different grades of plywood. I have purchased many pieces over the years from unfinished furniture stores. While they do have various woods for drawer sides and bottoms, etc, I’ve never brought home a piece and had any outgassing from them. “furniture grade” and “cabinet grade” plywoods are generally fine, in my experience.
Today there are some formaldehyde-free plywoods, such as PureBond, so “plywood” doesn’t necessarily mean “toxic” any more.
But “meets CARB standards” doesn’t mean zero formaldehyde.
