SikaBond -T21

Question from nunezgrl

We are trying to have wood floor installed in our house and the retail shop recommended SikaBond -T21. Has anyone used SikaBond -T21 all in one wood flooring urethane adhesive and moisture vapor reduction membrane? Any idea if this type of product is formaldehyde free and low VOC content or contain any hazardous materials?

Thanks!

Here’s the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the adhesive:
www.sika.ie/ie-msds-sikabond_t54.pdf

It says the product contains the hazardous ingredient “1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, diisodecyl ester” and that toxic exposure by inhalation is unlikely. Also no respiratory protection is required.

It doesn’t appear to contain formaldehyde. It is NOT labeled VOC-free, but neither are VOCs listed on the hazardous ingredient list.

Scorecard says 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, diisodecyl ester is a suspected developmenttal toxicant and endocrine toxicant.

I think if you use this with good ventilation it would be OK in the long run. I always use plain yellow woodworker’s glue (like Elmer’s) to lay wood floors. But if you are having it professionally done, they will want to use a product that they know will work with no problems.
